Books Info:

One Gunner's War free pdf ONE GUNNER'S WAR is the story of a bank clerk who joined the Surrey Yeomanry, a Territorial artillery regiment. Their training completed and equipped with 25-pounder gun-howitzers, the 144th Field Regiment RA sailed for Egypt in October 1940 and took part in the spearhead trust from the Sudan into Eritrea. After being attacked by cavalry at Keru they went on to the mountain cliffs of Keren. Here they fought the cream of the Italian army for two months in the physically most severe conditions of any battle of World War II. The story continues to the fall of the port of Massawa and the battle for Amba Alagi, a 12,000 foot high mountain in Abyssinia held by Italians until tightly surronded. Returning to Egypt, the regiment sailed to Tobruk in September 1941- two months later it took part in the breakout and then covered the withdrawal of the 8th Army when Rommel caught the British off balance. The regiment operated from the Gazala Line in mobile columns, harassing the enemy behind their own lines. In May 1942 the 144th joined the 10th Army (Paiforce), serving in Iraq, Syria and Persia. After four and a half years in the Middle East and gaining a commission, Francis returned to the UK, married his fiancee, Joan, and served with the 32nd Field Regiment RA in the Hartz Mountains of Germany until he was demobbed in 1946.

With war impending he joined the Surrey Yeomanry and served with that regiment in the Middle East campaigns. After receiving a commission he returned home, married Joan and spent his last year in the army in Germany. He trained in forestry at Aberdeen University, kept bees and sold honey to support his growing family. In his spare time he built a yacht and with Joan as crew explored the coast and inland waterways of Western Australia. Appointed Director of National Parks he built up a fine body of rangers and Joan accompanied him visiting remote parks and supporting the rangers' wives. Retiring in 1980, Francis was concerned about the bad treatment received by Australian soldiers returning from Vietnam.
