Books Info:

Edwin Chadwick free pdf Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890) was the central figure who shaped public health, government administration, and public services in the nineteenth century, setting the agenda for all future reform. He wrote at a time when the average adult's life expectancy in the industrialized towns and cities was twenty-one years of age. Before Chadwick, the issue of how to deal with the squalor brought about by the Industrial Revolution had simply never been addressed. His writings, particularly the pamphlets, informed the lay reader about bettering their conditions and he was also a persistent lobbyist of the government. The set is notable for its sheer comprehensiveness. It not only brings together Chadwick's public health works, such as his 1842 Report on the Sanitary Condition of the Labouring Population , for which he is most known, but also makes available for the first time his works on education. These in themselves were ground-breaking at the time but are now largely unknown and very scarce. David Gladstone himself, an expert on the period and Chadwick, had never heard of these pamphlets until he unearthed them at the UCL library in London. Finer's biography The Life and Times of Sir Edwin Chadwick (1952), reprinted here, is still definitive and unsurpassed with an extensive bibliography, but even this does not list many of the items we are reproducing. Indeed, many of these pamphlets have never been reprinted before which can only mean that very few libraries will have this material.
