Sallies: Poems PDF ePub eBook

Books Info:

Sallies: Poems free pdf As its title indicates, Sallies is a collection of poetic sallies - outbreaks and outbursts, excursions and flights of fancy, bold violations of custom, and darting leaps into the unknown. These precocious sallies range from elegies to comic excursions into forbidden subjects, including a major poem on flatulence - an ode to bran. The poems in the first section explore the complex texture of life and death. The second section is an exercise in wit, and the last section is a set of complimentary poems to a young woman (Sallie) in the great tradition of Plutarch's Laura poems or Dante's Beatrice poems. Dillard cleverly ties together his various types of "sallies" to communicate his overall themes of light and dark, humor and gravity.
