Knockdown : The Harrowing True Account of a Yacht Race Turned Deadly free pdf In the extreme sport of blue water -- or open ocean -- yacht racing, the Sydney to Hobart challenge is considered one of the most treacherous races in the world. 1998 proved why. Slammed by a sudden freak storm that unleashed 100 mph winds and waves over 90 feet tall, twenty-four boats were abandoned at sea as hundreds of sailors fought for their lives. This is the riveting story of that tragic race -- the punishing storm, the heroic rescues, the grim loss of life -- and a thought-provoking look at the people who risked families and fortunes for victory.

Premier adventure writer Martin Dugard takes us down 735 miles of Australia's eastern coast, and across the Bass Strait (known among sailors as "Hell on High Water"), as he re-creates the nightmare voyages of several ill-fated crews that set sail on December 27, 1998. Through interviews with racers, organizers, survivors, and devastated family members, he chronicles the emotional saga of the windswept sailors whose skill and daring were futile against the massive waves and unrelenting winds of a spontaneous hurricane.

Dugard also brings to life the epic bravery exhibited during the largest rescue operation in Australian history. Thirty vessels and forty aircraft joined the frenetic search that witnessed volunteers leaping into raging waters to save sailors, and later relied on infra-red night vision systems to locate survivors through the pitch-black night.

Amazingly, fifty-seven sailors were saved, but six died -- including two whose bodies were never found. Dugard examines why storm warnings were ignored, why crews who turned back were ironically pounded harder, and how the sinking of Australia's favorite ship, the Winston Churchill, spurred both national outrage
