The Poetical Works of Lucy Larcom free pdf Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Lucy Larcom In 1846 she went to Illinois with her married sister to earn her living by teaching school. Though she had not attended a school since she was thirteen years old, her brilliant mind had trained itself in leisure hours, and she was deemed fully competent to instruct the wild urchins of Looking Glass Prairie, Illinois. Earnestly and efficiently she did her work, but at the same time she yearned for a more liberal education and larger field of usefulness. With this end in view, she helped herself through Monticello Seminary by aiding in the instruction. Philosophy, history, and English literature she delighted in, but mathematics were little to her taste. She graduated in June, 1852, and had used her time so wisely that she was really exceedingly well equipped for service along educational lines. With her capabilities thus enlarged, she returned to Massachusetts to teach at Beverly, and later went to Wheaton Seminary at Norton. During the ten years that she spent in teaching, she broadened and deepened her intellectual powers and became far more intimate with the different branches of literary culture than might have been possible in more formal ways. She herself felt that the work she did was an important preparation for a literary career. "To be a good teacher implies self-discipline," she once said, "and a book written without something of that sort of personal preparation cannot be a very valuable one." In the midst of her work she found time to write some of her brightest poems, including the famous "Hannah Binding Shoes," and to deepen the rich friendship she had formed with Whittier. She delighted in the opportunities which her work offered for making friends. Girls who had come within the scope of her kindly influence soon became strongly attached to her, and she retained their interest to the last. In 1862, forced by ill health to give up teaching, she turned her attention more closely to literary work. For the weekly papers she composed homely riveside verses, and sometimes, stirred by her patriotic feeling wrote bright, forcible poems on the war then raging. This work, which gave her standing and reputation, led to her becoming an editor of Our Young Folks, whose traditions St. Nicholas has inherited. Conscientious and interested in her work, she was well fitted for the task offered her. Her own childhood had left with her many happy memories, and she knew by an unerring instinct what children were thinking about and what would interest them.
