The Manuscripts of Lord Kenyon, Vol. 4 free pdf Excerpt from The Manuscripts of Lord Kenyon, Vol. 4 The MSS. in the possession of Lord Kenyon at Gredington Hall may be said to relate chiefly to Lancashire, in which county the Kenyon family has been settled from very early times: but the earliest documents in the collection do not relate to the Kenyon family. A curious account, dated in 1524, of a miracle performed near Doncaster, and ten letters dating somewhat later in the 16th century, interesting as being illustrative of domestic life and feeling, belonged to and are connected with the Radcliffes and Faringtons. The spelling in these letters gives an idea of the local pronunciation, and bears a striking resemblance to that found in Scotch writings. The papers, relating actually to county affairs in Lancashire, begin with the 17th century, being those preserved by Alexander Rigby, then Clerk of the Peace, and by his descendants, one of whom, Alice Rigby, the heiress of George Rigby, also Clerk of the Peace, married Roger Kenyon, and brought into the Kenyon family the property at Peel in Lancashire. Without instancing individual documents, it may be observed that from the commencement of the 17th century, there are in Lord Kenyon's MSS. valuable materials for a history of Lancashire - ecclesiastical, political, and social, besides much useful matter for the compilation of the personal history of many Lancashire families, especially those which had their origin in or around Liverpool, Manchester, and Wigan- the rapid rise in the social scale of some of these being illustrated by No. 1024. In 1604 (No. 14) there is a detailed account of the Clergy in the county and of the nature of their cures. Manchester was "a colledge consisting upon (sic) a warden and certaine fellowes, who jointly, together with two ministers and four queristors, doe maintaine the service in that church."
