Mendele Der Buchhandler free pdf English summary: Mendele the Bookseller is the contrivance of the literary master Sholem Yankev Abramovitsh. Mendele travels with a horse and wagon through Ukraine in order to furnish Jews with books. In his travels, manuscripts are offered to him, which he edits, provides with an explanatory preface, and publishes. Consequently, Abramovitsch maintained this fiction from the beginning of his career as a Yiddish writer in 1864. At his death in 1917, Mendele as an author was well known as a clever Yiddish novelist and the name Abramovitsh was nearly forgotten. This book explains why Abramovtisch used this fictionalization of himself and traces the development of modern Yiddish literature between 1864 and 1900. Abramovitsch was born in 1835 near Minsk and after the death of his father in 1848, he turned to the study of the Talmud but in 1862 he fell in with a professional beggar who brought him to Kamenetz-Podolsk. There he found a mentor, who helped teach him secular knowledge and the Russian language. From 1857 he wrote clever essays in Hebrew, because educated Jews viewed Yiddish as rude, a language suitable only and only used for basic everyday speech but beginning in 1864 Abramovitsch believed that if he, as a traditional Jew, were going to embrace the modern world, then it was best achieved through the Yiddish language. Consequently, he developed a subtle, nuanced Yiddish, wrote novels and disseminated them to the Ukrainian Jewish communities. His travels brought him through Berdichev and Zhitomir to Odessa, where he was hailed as the founder of Yiddish literature. This book explained the adventures of his life and explains his works.
