Air Power in the Maritime Environment PDF ePub eBook

Books Info:

Air Power in the Maritime Environment free pdf Drawing on archival as well as secondary sources, the book examines key themes within the sphere of air power in the maritime environment. Providing an essentially chronological study that encompasses the period of the First World War up to the present day, it explores the evolution of naval airpower of several nations, most notably the Americans, Japanese and British. The book begins by looking at the first operational use of carriers during the First World War, highlighting the contrasting visions and concerns of the Royal Naval Air Service - which had initial responsibility for homeland air-defence - and of the Royal Flying Corps. It then moves on to look at developments in naval aviation between the wars, with particular reference to the differing thinking and experience of the USA, Japan and the UK. The following three chapters concentrate on carrier actions during the Second World War, the period that witnessed aircraft carriers replace battleships as the dominant force at sea. This dominance is then further explored in the post war period, with analysis of the aircraft carrier in the nuclear age- particularly their deployment by the USA in its campaigns in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. The final chapter examines the long standing questions - particularly in Europe - regarding the use and economy of carriers in the modern world. Whilst the focal point of the volume is the historical development and operations of aircraft carriers, it also addresses ongoing debates about the cost-effectiveness and utility of aircraft carriers. As such the book will be of interest to both historians and those wanting a fuller perspective on current issues of maritime strategy.
