Books Info:

Droitwich Through Time free pdf For more than 4,000 years, Droitwich depended for its existence on the unique natural subterranean resource of Droitwich Brine, one of the purest and most concentrated naturally occurring solutions of salt in the world. Known internationally, first as a salt manufacturing town, and later also as a medicinal spa specialising in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism, Droitwich has now all but severed its salty connections to become a pleasant West Midlands commuter town with some local light industry. Its two recently restored and now reopened canals have also started to attract more tourists to the area. The grime and steam of the saltworks and the smoke of the multitude of chimneys are now long gone and little remains to mark that once all important industry. There are more remains of the town's time as a spa, and even some hope of a small-scale revival, but in the meantime new 'green field' housing developments on the periphery are enlarging the town and changing its shape and appearance beyond all recognition. In this book, a selection of photographs both old and new record some of those changes.

About Roger Peberdy

Dr Roger Peberdy, originally from Leicester, and his wife Helen, from Shropshire, have lived in Droitwich since 1966. Roger spent over thirty years as a local GP, prescribing the full range of brine spa treatments, and can thus now claim to be the last 'brine doctor' living in Droitwich. Helen Peberdy is a mother of four and qualified swimming teacher, and shares a keen interest in local history with her husband. Paul Jones received his first camera as a gift at the age of eight, and has since taken thousands of photographs of Droitwich Spa and its surrounding villages and churches. He received his LRPS certificate in 2006. A keen local historian, Paul's articles have been printed by the Droitwich Historical and Archaeological Society. His previous books include St Peter's Church Droitwich and The Oddingley Murders - a Photographic Tour.
