Religion remains at the heart of the relationship between law and homosexuality. "Law, Religion and Homosexuality" provides a systematic and nuanced analysis of how religion has shaped, and continues to shape, the legislation that regulates the lives of gay men and lesbians. Set against the context of recent and widespread global change in which religion has been instrumental in encouraging the continuation and enhancement of laws criminalizing homosexual sex in some states, but has underpinned the development of greater legal rights for sexual minorities in other states the authors focus on the legislative arrangements of one jurisdiction, the United Kingdom, in order to provide an in-depth account of considerable influence of religion on law making. Through an examination of how religious discourse influences the legislative process in the form of official interventions made by faith communities and organizations, as well as by expressions of faith by individual actors the book shows how religion is central to both enabling and restricting the development of lesbian and gay legal equality. Whilst some claim that faith has been marginalized in the legislation processes of contemporary western societies, the authors show that in respect of homosexuality religious discourse continues to be central to law making. "Law, Religion and Homosexuality" demonstrates the dynamic relationship between law and religion in respect of homosexuality and will be of considerable interest to a wide audience of academics, policy makers, and stakeholders.
