Stories from the Land of Divorce free pdf Almost a third of all marriages in Australia now end in divorce. The trauma of divorce reaches into almost every household. Divorce has produced a kind of social revolution. Only 30 to 40 years ago, things were very different: divorce was shameful- it was something to be kept quiet. Women rarely dared to leave miserable, even violent marriages. Nowadays, in two thirds of cases, women are the ones who leave. Even though it is common, divorce is no easy matter for most people: almost always it is a shattering experience - a whole life and family can be torn apart. An identity built up over years of living with one partner is stripped away, and the person has to start all over again. Some people struggle to free themselves of unhappiness through divorce and to forge a new independent life. Others must recover a sense of themselves after they have been left by a partner they still love. Everyone who gets divorced goes though an emotionally-charged, potentially life-changing experience. There are surveys on divorce, legal guides and self-help books. "Stories from the Land of Divorce" is none of these - it describes in 15 peoples' own words what it feels like to have a marriage end. The book aims to allow individuals and two couples explore how they were affected by the process of divorce, to talk about what they expected from marriage, what were the best and worst moments for them, and how they are rebuilding their lives. The interviews have been presented as short stories, edited to highlight the individual differences in people's speech and personality. Readers will meet people like: Bernadette - a woman from a large Catholic family who married her abusive husband when she was 19. Bernadette's battle to free herself and her three children has all the elements of an urban nightmare - a man who is totally untrustworthy, no money, isolation and physical violence- Rocco - an Italian-Australian who falls in love with the perfect woman for him, a beautiful, young and innocent Italian immigrant. He sees himself as her guardian and protector. They have two children and a 20 year marriage which he finally ends because of his wife's increasingly emotional outbursts, aggression and alcoholism- and Sophie and Brett - a young academic couple who fall instantly and passionately in love, but who find it impossible over the four years of their marriage to work out a way to solve their emotional and practical problems and to sustain a mutually satisfying sexual relationship.
