Books Info:

London: After a Fashion free pdf "London: After a Fashion" argues that fashion is central to the experience of modernity in late nineteenth and twentieth century London. Understanding fashionable consumption not only as a pleasurable aspect of metropolitan life, but as fundamental to the evolution of modern sensibilities, Alistair O'Neill maps fashion's progress in a variety of London locations, including Carnaby Street, the King's Road, Jermyn Sreet and Soho. The book is a consideration of fashions particular to the history of London. The author traces the history of fashion within modern London through a lively and unexpected reconsideration of cultural figures and forms. From examples as diverse as the design-conscious use of chintz in the 1980s, the use of the hat in British Surrealism, and the popularity of tattooing in the London society of the 1890s, the book charts a broad territory. Without resorting to grand narratives, O'Neill examines overlooked instances of transition that have remained marginalised in existing accounts of London's cultural history due to their association with the practices of fashion. Aimed at those with an interest in the history of fashion, the book will also appeal to anybody interested in art history, design and modern society.
