The author provides compelling evidence that the Polish elites were highly familiar with, and receptive to, the idea of crusade. Contrary to many of the established positions of Polish historiography, this book demonstrates how Poles, particularly the members of the Piast dynasty, were deliberate participants in crusading, and how family traditions contributed to diverse crusading activities in the Holy Land and Prussia in the course of the twelfth century Darius von Guttner-Sporzynski teaches history and has a PhD fromthe University of Melbourne. His research interests cover military orders, the issues of cultural transmission and the interrelationship between crusading and mission in Prussia before 1309.
