Intimacy and Italian Migration free pdf Why do so many people around the world associate people with origins in Italy with family life, romantic love and the pleasures of eating? This edited volume focuses on intimate relations in the construction of national identities among international migrants. Scholars have increasingly focused on the creation of nations outside the borders of Italy through labor activism and the creation of ethnic residential public spheres- here we add the role of intimate cultural processes, examining the private lives of migrants from Italy through biography, oral history and ethnography. Together the essays suggest why and how - across cultures - Italian-ness has come to be associated with or symbolized by a particular kind of femininity, the public expression of private emotions, and supposedly distinctive elements of domestic life - the Italian mother, a peculiarly 'Italian' intensity of family solidarities, special facility in romantic love, and the pleasures of eating and of the table. Although our approach also sheds new light on a particular form of feminized Italian masculinity observable in Italy and abroad, it is particularly useful in describing women's complex relationship to nations, women's transformations of identities through migration, and women's participation in nation-building. The intimate relations developing among migratory men, women, families, and communities and national states continue to be central themes in the creation and consolidation of nations in the twentieth and - we assert-twenty-first centuries. Yet the consequences of creating intimate and emotional ties between nations and citizens were not only light-hearted or grist for the mill of opera bouffe. They could be devastating. The millions who died in international, regional, anti-colonial and civil wars of the twentieth century did so, presumably, because they had learned (or were forced) to 'love' their countries as a family, and to love them deeply enough to give themselves, their bodies, and their children's bodies to the nation. Such potentially deadly emotions of nationalism are scarcely a thing of the past. This collection of essays suggests how these emotions were and continue to be created in a mobile world.
