JANET MAYBIN and JOAN SWANN work in the Centre for Language and Communications at the Open University, UK, where they are responsible for the design and production of a range of open learning materials on aspects of English language studies. Janet Maybin also writes and researches on children's and adults' informal language and literacy practices and has written the forthcoming publication, Children's Voices: Talk, Language and Identity (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005).
