Yang Chu's "Garden of Pleasure" PDF ePub eBook

Books Info:

Yang Chu's Yang Chu was a philosopher of the classic age of Chinese thought. He probably lived in the third century. Unlike philosophers of his time, Yang Chu did not have a school or many disciples for that matter. He was a wandering philosopher, whose few pupils followed him around. His method of teaching is similar to that of the ancient Greek philosophers like Socrates, who developed their philosophy and the thinking capabilities of their disciples through discussion and debate. (It is from Yang Chu's discourses that were memorised and recorded by his favourite pupil, Meng-sun-Yang, that we now have this single fragment of his teachings. Because this fragment is quite complete and very explicit, we are able to understand his philosophy.) Yang Chu has been called "the philosopher of pleasure and contentment" because he is concerned mainly with enjoying life to its fullest. He believes that a person must express his individuality to the fullest - following and developing his senses. This book is a collection of debates on the subject of living according to the senses and individuality. They raise questions such as: Is this way of life moral or immoral? Selfish or unselfish? Can a society of members who act solely according to their senses and true ego exist? The answer that we may find in Yang Chu's debates can be summarized thus: true egoism is not looking for fame and glory, therefore it doesn't harm, limit, offend or enslave anyone else, but allows one to flow unimpeded with their natural inclinations.
