Training is built around three video segments. Givin' It: how to express criticism in a nonthreatening manner Takin' It: how to accept criticism without acting irrationally Workin' It Out: how to negotiate a solution without resorting to aggressive or violent behavior Dealing with Anger features real-life conflict situations that are realistic in terms of cultural issues, language, and dress. Content Highlights: Each video segment begins with a vignette of a conflict situation that escalates into a potentially dangerous confrontation. The vignettes are narrated by Bernie, a street-smart character who earns the trust and respect of viewers as he takes them through the conflict situations. He freezes the action and describes a skill that could have been used to defuse the violence. The same situation is played out again, but this time the appropriate skill is used and the problem is solved without resorting to aggressive behavior. Content Highlights--Program for Males: Givin' It: Conflict Situation--John is really hot! His sister broke up with Chico and now Chico's been spreading rumors about her being pregnant. Takin' It: Conflict Situation--Marcus's father comes down hard on him for getting poor grades in school. He demands that Marcus bring up his grades and straighten out his attitude. Workin' It Out: Conflict Situation--Chad notices that the gym shoes Lamont is wearing are the same ones that were stolen from his locker. Lamont says that he bought the shoes from a friend. Content Highlights - Program for Females: Givin' It: Conflict Situation--After a confrontation with a white male teacher, Tasha storms out of the classroom feeling humiliated in front of her friends. She feels that the teacher is prejudiced and intentionally ""calls her out"" while overlooking the behaviors of other students. Takin' It: Conflict Situation--Tiphnee is confronted angrily by her older sister regarding rumors that she has heard. She demands that Tiphnee ""get her act together"" and stop ruining the family's reputation. Workin' It Out: Conflict Situation--Dion and Lyn are furious with each other as they argue about the ""boyfriend"" they both claim to be theirs. They each contend that the other person is lying about who said what to whom.

Dr W. Rodney Hammond , PhD, is the former (retired) Director of the Division of Violence Prevention within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA He began his career at CDC in 1996 following 23 years in academia where he became nationally recognized for his research and program, Project PACT (Positive Adolescents Choices Training) focused on preventing youth violence. As the first permanent director of the Division of Violence Prevention, he led the division through unprecedented growth in its research, programs, and budget for addressing child maltreatment, youth violence, family and intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and suicide. Throughout his CDC career, Dr. Hammond has been dedicated to promoting a public health approach to prevent violence, both nationally and internationally. His efforts have brought recognition to CDC as a world leader in violence prevention, and have engaged numerous partners, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Doris Duke Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, UNICEF, and the United Nations Population Fund, in violence prevention activities. He represented CDC on the Violence Prevention Alliance, a network of World Health Organization Member States, international agencies, and other organizations working to prevent violence globally, as well as the National Forum to Prevent Youth Violence, which represents partnerships with the White House, the Departments of Justice, Education, and other federal agencies to address youth violence. Dr. Hammond has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service for his efforts in public health and mental health collaboration, the National Association of School Psychology President's Award for Mental Health, and the Society for Research on Adolescence Award for Adolescent Research and Policy Integration. In 2006, he was inducted as a Distinguished Psychologist into the National Academy of Practice. In 2010, the American Psychological Association (APA) awarded him with both the Nicholas Hobbs Award for his lifetime achievements in child advocacy and policy and the Meritorious Research Service Award for his outstanding contributions to psychological science by enhancing opportunities and resources for the field. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, IL and his Ph.D. in psychology at Florida State University in Tallahassee. He completed post-doctoral study at Harvard University, USA.
