Cotton is indigenous to Brazil, and before the advent of Europeans the Indian tribes used the lint from the wild tree cotton to make fishing lines, nets, hammocks, etc. Under the Portuguese rule a small amount was cultivated with slave labor, part of which was exported and part woven by hand into coarse materials for clothing for the slaves and for making bags, etc. The production gradually increased, but it was not until the American civil war, when the price of cotton was high, that the acreage became extensive. According to Professor Appelt, Brazil exported in 1860 some 11,000,000 kilos of cotton, in 1860 to 1865 about 22,000,000 kilos annually, and in 1865 to 1870 about 45,000,000 kilos annually, reaching in 1872 the unexceeded amount of 78,516,819 kilos, valued at 46,445,900 milreis. The exchange value of the milreis in 1872 was 25 pence (50.66 cents), so that the cotton exported from Brazil in 1872 amounted to 346,231 bales of 500 pounds each, and was worth about $23,222,950 gold.
