About Briar Grace-Smith

Briar Grace-Smith (Ngati Hau, Ngati Wai) is a writer, actor and award-winning playwright. She has written for television, film and radio and has had short fiction included in anthologies. She has received a Bruce Mason Playwrights Award (1995), a Chapman Tripp Theatre Award (1997) and an Arts Foundation Laureate Award (2000). In 1998 she was Writer in Residence at Massey University, and in 2003 she was Writer in Residence at Victoria University. In 2010 she won an inaugural New Zealand Scriptwriters Award for her debut feature, The Strength of Water. Translators Te Ohorere and Wiremu Kaa have worked as writers, teachers and educators and worked on publishing projects focused on te reo Maori and educational resources. Te Ohorere Kaa has written many children's books in te reo Maori, and Wiremu Kaa was an advisor to the Ministry of Education, lecturer at Victoria University and chairman of its School of Maori Studies in 1996. In 2010 they received Sir Kingi Ihaka Awards, recognising their contribution to strengthening the continuity of Maori culture.
