Henry James on Stage and Screen free pdf In the 1890s, when Henry James tried to achieve fame and financial security by turning to the theatre, he was unceremoniously booed off the stage. Since the 1940s and 50s his fiction has nevertheless been consistently interpreted by composers and film directors, culminating in the recent film adaptations of his novels by Merchant Ivory, Jane Campion and Iain Softley. This book traces the historical development of these adaptations.

JOHN BRADLEY was editor of the London Quarterly (1994-97) and he has contributed essays and reviews to many newspapers and journals in Britain and the United States, including the Boston Book Review, Essays in Criticism, the Independent on Sunday, the Times Higher Education Supplement and the Times Literary Supplement. He is the editor of a collection of essays, Henry James and Homo-Erotic Desire (1999), and the author of a full-length study, Henry James's Permanent Adolescence.
