Gerry, however, was too strongly imbued with the Dutch love for home to allow his social calls to interfere with those of domestic life. He enjoyed an occasional social entertainment, and belonged to several clubs as well as the two leading secret orders, but was content to pay his dues and get the password which he neglected to use. Two daughters had come to gladden their home, and, as their mother had so many other calls upon her time, their care was left principally to white-aproned nurses. Mr. Arnoldus' law practice had become important and lucrative, and as a result his time during the day was spent in his office or in attendance at the courts, but he made it a point whenever possible to spend the evenings at home, romping and playing with the children. Of course Clotille was not out 313 all the time, but her evenings were more frequently spent at a theatre, dinner or ball, or perhaps a concert or reception. She was always considerate and affectionate and he knew that he had no real occasion to doubt her love for him and the children, but he could not help feeling that they were neglected.
