Harry Lorrequer free pdf Excerpt from Harry Lorrequer Charles James Lever was born in Dublin in 1806. His ancestry was wholly English, and his keen sympathy with Irish life and character, and accurate understanding of it, were accordingly due not to racial inheritance, but to the accident of his Hibernian birth and residence. He was graduated at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1827- traveled on the Continent, and made a voyage to Canada (the latter in 1829)- was a practising physician for several years- and held the position of secretary to the British embassy in Belgium 1840-42, and of consul at Spezzia and later at Trieste 1857-72. His death occurred at Trieste in 1872. As has been the case with many other writers, his first novel, "Harry Lorrequer," not only made him famous, but is the one upon which his reputation still chiefly rests. It was published serially from February, 1837, in the "Dublin University Magazine," and exhibits Lever's rollicking humor, power of graphic and sustained narration, and vigorous style at their best. As a story-teller pure and simple, he ranks with Marryat and Collins - that is, with the best that English literature produced in the nineteenth century. Nor was he lacking in the higher qualities of the novelist. If his delineation of character is deficient in subtlety and fineness of imagination, it is conspicuous for fidelity to actual experience - namely, his own. His works are very largely accurate records of his own observation, "Harry Lorrequer," in particular, being professedly little more than an amplified note-book of the men he had met, the good stories he had heard, and the amusing scenes he saw. It has accordingly a distinct value as a record of manners, aside from its fascination as a story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
