The Morals and Manners of the Seventeenth Century free pdf Excerpt from The Morals and Manners of the Seventeenth Century: Being the Character of La Bruyere Just two hundred years ago Jean de la Bruyere issued the little volume which at once gave him his place in that illustrious throng of learned intellect which made the close of the seventeenth century and the reign of Louis XIV. so great and glorious. Racine, Moliere, Bossuet, Fenelon enjoyed with him the favour of the King, and La Rochefoucauld, La Fayette, and Madame de Sevigne were also of the Court. Little is known of La Bruyere's youth, and we have few details of his family, or of his personal life- indeed, it is through his characters and reflections alone that we can form any intimate knowledge of him- but it does not require much imagination to build or to idealize the hidden life, even the carefully shrouded love, which his own thoughts reveal to us. Once he lifts the veil of obscurity in which his family history is enveloped, when he tells us, with terse humour, of that Geoffroy de la Bruyere of the Crusades- and it has been said that an ancestor of his exercised the duties of Civil Lieutenant during the time of the barricades of Paris in the reigns of Henri III. and IV. Guizot says that he was born at Dourdan in 1639, but no entirely authentic record of his birth has been discovered, although from one of the parish registers of Paris we learn that Jean de la Bruyere was christened there on the I7th of August, 1645.
