He clothed him in fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck. He made him to ride in the second chariot which he had. So Joseph was lord over all the land of Egypt. Now, there was in Egypt more food than the people could eat, for the years were plentiful years. But Joseph knew that years of famine would come when the grain would not grow. So he gathered the food of the field, and laid it up in the cities. Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, for it was without number. Then the plentiful years were ended, and the years of dearth began to come. The famine was in all lands. But Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold to the people. All countries came to Egypt to Joseph to buy corn. Now, Jacob said to his sons: "I have heard that there is corn in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us, that we may live." So Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy corn in Egypt. But Benjamin, Joseph's youngest brother, Jacob sent not. Joseph's brothers came and bowed down themselves before him. Joseph knew his brothers, but they knew not him. Joseph spoke roughly to them and said, "Why are you come?" They said, "To buy food." Joseph said, "You are spies- to see the bareness of the land you are come." They said to him: "No, my lord, but to buy food are we come. We are twelve brothers, the sons of one man. The youngest is this day with our father, and one is not...".
