About Ken J. Leo

Ken Leo, BCom (Hons), MBA, has been an academic for over 40years, including 20 years as Professor of Accounting at aUniversity in Western Australia. During this time, he has taughtcompany accounting to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Hehas been involved in writing books published by John Wiley since1981, and has also written books and monographs for otherorganisations including CPA Australia, the Group of 100 and theAustralian Accounting Research Foundation. He was a founding memberof the Urgent Issues Group, serving on that body from 1995 to 2001.He subsequently served on the Australian Accounting Standards Boardfrom 2002 to 2007, both as a member and as deputy chair of theBoard.

John Hoggett, BCom (Hons), BTh, MFM, AAUQ, FCPA, hastaught accounting at several different universities in WesternAustralia and Queensland during his 40 years as an academic. He hastaught introductory accounting, corporate accounting and accountingtheory to undergraduate and postgraduate students. John has writtenbooks and monographs for a variety of organisations including CPAAustralia and the Group of 100. He was also involved in secondaryaccounting education for several years with the Curriculum Councilof Western Australia.

John Sweeting, BEc, MEc, PhD, CPA, CA, was SeniorLecturer in Accountancy at Queensland University of Technology.John s background includes a mixture of academic and businesspositions. He has taught at Swinburne University of Technology andthe University of Central Queensland, and has spent time with theNational Companies and Securities Commission (now the AustralianSecurities and Investments Commission). John has also heldpositions with a large international chartered accounting fi rm anda company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. In additionto running in-house courses for accounting fi rms, John has alsoconducted Professional Development courses for CPA Australia andThe Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. He has alsobeen actively involved in both the CPA Program and the CAProgram.

With contributions from Gavin Nicholson, BEcon, LLB, MBA(Adv), PhD, FAICD, AFAIMis an Associate Professor in Accountancy at Queensland Universityof Technology. In addition to researching, lecturing and developingmaterials in the areas of governance policy and practice, Gavin isan experienced director, governance researcher and boardconsultant. Gavin has provided advice on corporate governance andstrategy to listed and large public companies, government-ownedcorporations, statutory authorities, not-for-profi t organisationsand local government. He has published extensively in the area ofcorporate governance, co-authoring two books Boards that Work: ANew Guide for Directors and Board, Director and CEOEvaluation and more than 50 journal articles or refereedconference papers. Gavin is an active speaker on both practical andacademic governance issues and has presented his work inAustralasia, Africa, Europe and North America.
