He also holds the Bartley-Smith/Wharton Distinguished Chairin Radiation Oncology in the Department of Radiation Oncology atthe Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University of Toronto. He isthe Head and Neck Oncology Program Chair at Princess MargaretCancer Centre, the co-Chair of the US NCI Head and Neck SteeringCommittee, Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials, CTEP, and afull standing member of the Commission of the InternationalCommission on Radiation Units (ICRU). He is the recipient ofnumerous international awards, and research grants. He haspublished almost 300 peer reviewed papers, in excess of 50 bookchapters, and has written or edited 6 oncology textbooks. Hisinterests include sarcoma and head and neck cancer, translationalresearch, IMRT delivery and the principles of image guidedradiotherapy, chemo-radiotherapy and molecular targeting. He is amember of the TNM Committee of the Union for International CancerControl (UICC), Chair of the UICC Prognostic ClassificationSub-Committee and represents the UICC as liaison in severaloncology sites to the American Joint Committee on Cancer(AJCC). James Brierley is a Professor in the Department of RadiationOncology at the University of Toronto, Princess Margaret CancerCentre. He obtained his medical degree from Westminster MedicalSchool, University of London. He initially did postgraduatetraining in Internal Medicine before transferring to ClinicalOncology. He is interested in the management of gastrointestinalmalignancy and thyroid malignancy and cancer staging andsurveillance. He has written extensively on thyroid cancer, therole of radiation in gastrointestinal malignancy and cancer stagingand surveillance and is actively involved in research into the roleof radiation in the management of gastrointestinal and endocrinemalignancies and ensuring staging data is collected and used on apopulation basis. He is the previous head of the GastrointestinalSite Group at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and is currentlythe Canadian Partnership Against- Cancer Expert Lead, Stagingand Surveillance. He is a Member of the AJCC Executive and Chair ofthe AJCC Education and Promotions Working Group, Co-Chair ofthe UICC TNM Prognostic Factors Core Group and Co-Editor of theUICC 8th edition TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours.
