Books Info:

Violetta Thurstan free pdf Anna Violet Thurston or Violetta, as she was universally known, had an exceptional life even when judged by today's more liberal attitudes to women. Born in 1879, she died 99 years later in Penryn, Comwall. Before the first World War she quarried as a nurse at the Royal London Hospital, WhitechapeL and also gained an external L.LA. diploma from St. Andrews University. In 1914 she volunteered to become a member of the Red Cross and was sent to Belgium. Captured by the Germans she was released in Denmark, then posted to Russia where she joined one of the Flying Ambulance Units working on the front line. The conditions were appalling and after a year in England recovering from pleurisy, she returned to care for the Russians retreating from Warsaw. She was awarded the Russian St George medal and later the Military Medal, two of the nine medals she was to obtain during her lifetime. After the war she studied weaving, spinning and dyeing in Sweden and subsequently became Director of Crafts for the Egyptian Government. This involved organising 700, Bedouin workers to spin and weave rugs and carpets in the desert near El Alamein. Although she was 60 years old in 1939, she became a 1st Officer in the WRNS lecturing on desert warfare and was then attached to the Falmouth Contraband Control. Her knowledge of languages was invaluable and led to work with refugees in Europe in the late 1940s. The last quarter of her life was spent in Cornwall, where Violetta was involved with the Cornwall Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, serving as their President for a number of years. As a past diocesan president of the Cornwall Catholic Women's League she helped organize the first Cornish pilgrimage to Rome since the Reformation. Despite failing health, she continued to lecture on textiles, and write books fiction and non-fiction. She was still taking parties of 30 people to visit European venues right up to her death on 13th April 1978. "The Use of Vegetable Dyes for Beginners" (Dryad Press) is now in its 17th edition. As part of the Guild's 40th Anniversary Celebrations in 1992, this monograph has been commissioned as a tribute to a very remarkable woman.
