Books Info:

Lewis and Clark free pdf In competition for a mostly unclaimed continent, the various Spanish, English, Dutch, French and Portuguese explorers guarded their maps as state secrets, aware that knowledge of the landscape was the key to acquisition - this book shows and explains how language differences and miscommunication with Native Americans, led to the wide-ranging variety and inconsistency that characterize early maps of North America. - To understand the nature of the quest to the Pacific, the University of Virginia Library and the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation have put together an exhibition of maps that were either in the personal library of Thomas Jefferson or were probably known to him. - The collection includes European productions, maps of continental penetration by French and Anglo-American explorers, as well as the map drawn in 1810 by William Clark as a result of the expedition. - Though technically inaccurate and consciously incomplete, the early maps reveal the active imaginations of their makers: from the narrow continent charted by Englishman John Farrer, in which a ten-day hike west from the head of Virginia's James River would bring one to the waterways of the "Indian Seas", to the fictional rivers conjectured by the Frenchman, Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce, baron de Lahontan, rivers that might carry explorers from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean- to the notions of pyramidal height-of-land and continental symmetry that influenced Jefferson's quest for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. - Foreword by John Logan Allen who has written more than twelve books, including his landmark, three-volume work North American Exploration.
