The causes that brought it to pass are all plainly written in open history. If it were desired to limit these causes mainly to the action of individuals, three men must be mentioned - a certain sea-captain, a Connecticut inventor, and a South Carolina statesman. In 1619 a Dutch vessel sailed into James River with a cargo of African slaves, which was the beginning of a large and continuous importation.
