Books Info:

The Deep Dark free pdf Olsen's book puts us in the midst of miners and their kinfolk during the Sunshine Mine fire, one of America's worst mining disasters. On May 2, 1972, 174 miners entered the Sunshine Mine on their daily quest for silver. When wisps of smoke first began to work their way through the shafts, it didn't alarm the miners, who thought it was probably a small flare-up. But the smoke soon became thick and was followed by increased carbon monoxide, which killed the miners who inhaled it. Olsen's blow-by-blow account weaves profiles of the miners into the chronicle of the disaster's progress. An evacuation got half to the surface, but 91 immediately suffocated in the poisonous gas. Astonishingly, two men down at 4800 feet survived for a week after they found a clear patch with water. Olsen's narrative is brisk and often grim, yet he chooses not to underscore the morbidity. He also details the positive repercussions from the tragedy: a federal agency solely responsible for mine safety, and an array of new rules.
