Books Info:

George Alfred Henty and the Victorian Mind free pdf George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) was "the boys' Dumas". His more than 70 juvenile novels (some 125 million sold worldwide) as well as the stories published in periodicals, were all adventures "to inculcate patriotism". More importantly, they set the code of behaviour by which young men fought Victoria's wars and ruled the far-flung Empire. When the sun eventually set on that empire, Henty (like Kipling) fell out of favour for his imperialist views. Now we can reevaluate him and see how this early war correspondent, settling down in London to dictate one heroic yarn after another, formed character as well as entertained youth. Today the Henty Society in Britain gathers together the many readers and collectors of his more than 200 publications. L.R.N. Ashley (PhD, Princeton) examines all Henty's works and takes his measure in a study which contributes to the history of ideas, the history of imperialism and the history of juvenile literature and popular taste and how it was formed and fed.
