In Damaged Goods, a non-fiction memoir, sheltered, Afro-centric Alabama-born Joyce Ann Ashford is date-raped in 1970 by a student in a Black university complex at the height of the Black Power Movement. Dorm mates reporting attacks had reputations destroyed. Joyce is Freshmen Queen of Spelman and Morehouse Colleges, on the Dean's list and the niece of an administrator at Clark College.

She conceals the attack, but it leads to bad choices. In 1974, after failed relationships with Black men, she meets Jean-Philippe Rambert, a gifted French architecture exchange student with an anxiety disorder at the University of Illinois and they embark on a quest to make him a successful architect. Racists assail the marriage for personal gain or to promote political and racial agendas. At the pinnacle of his success, in 1986, Jean-Philippe betrays Joyce after Whites humiliate him. He inadvertently unmasks her past and forces her to come to terms with it.
