About Marius Ungerer

Dr Marius Ungerer is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) where he teaches, as core faculty member, strategic management, leadership and change management on the MBA programme. He has been an annual visiting Professor at the NUCB Graduate School, International MBA Program, Nagoya, Japan since 2009, and also visited the University of Peking, Beijing, China during July 2011 as part of an MBA exchange programme on "Doing business in China". He is a visiting faculty member of the University of Johannesburg. Before joining the USB in April 2008, he worked for more than twenty-five years in various industries such as financial services, manufacturing, information technology, aviation, and education and training, on various assignments. He completed an Honours degree in Industrial Psychology at the University of Stellenbosch, his MCom and DCom at RAU, and his MBA at Potchefstroom University. He is a registered Industrial Psychologist, Management Service Advisor and Systems Thinking coach. He is also a certified Sustainability Assurance Practitioner (CSAP). His main areas of specialisation are Organisational Strategy, Change Management, Leadership and Intellectual Capital. His doctoral thesis was on the subject of Capability-Based Strategy Utilising an Intellectual Capital View. He has extensive experience in retail mass-market banking strategies and has worked in strategy development and execution for both private sector companies and NGOs. His change management experience covers transformation projects, business turn-around initiatives and process improvement strategies. Since 2008 he has consulted to Absa, Agra in Namibia, Argo Media, Astute IT Services, Bankmed, Compuscan, Emerald Casino and Resort, G4 Security Services, the Imperial Group, Media 24, KWV, Kleine Zalse wines, SANRAL, TransUnion, The Viking group and Woolworths Financial Services on strategic management, change management, leadership development and executive coaching. Since November 2011 he has been a non-executive director of Thuthukani Financial Services. He has travelled extensively internationally in order to benchmark business practices. He has visited Europe, UK, Israel, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland, Singapore, Japan, China and other Africa countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Egypt and Ghana to develop diverse business perspectives. In 2000 he published work related to Performance Management and Strategic Planning with Johan Herholdt and Maurits Pretorius in the Nuts
